Snow? Bah Humbug!

It is no secret, I don't enjoy the snow. So it should come as no surprise when it snowed this past Monday that I was not too thrilled about it. Oh, but it gets better! The day started out normally. I needed to get to the office as my Internet had not yet been connected, that happened finally on Wednesday. So, off I go. I'm starting out in a pretty good mood, until...I opened the door to leave and what do my eyes behold, yes, you guessed it, snow! Not just snow, but a lot of it!

This should not be that big of a deal, but, I live in Oregon. It really doesn't snow in Eugene and when it does happen to sneak in, it's usually only a little and melts pretty quick. Oh no, not this time :-). We are not at all prepared for this type of inclement weather.

So, I closed the door, changed my shoes and out I go. Okay, not so bad, I made it across the street to catch the bus. Hmmm, where is the bus? Twenty minutes after the scheduled time it shows up. Okay, so now we are on our way. Oh, but it's never that easy is it?! No, we are sliding all the way down Willamette. At the stop light the cars on the other side, mind you they are at a complete stop, are sliding. Oh my goodness, there's ice under this blanket of snow!

Well, needless to say it just gets better and better. It took me 3hrs to get to work that day! 3 hrs! It's technically only about a 20 minute drive to get from 29th /Willamette to Eugene Station to my final destination in Springfield...did I mention it took 3 hrs?!

The course of the morning took on many comical turns. The first bus, after attempting to negotiate a corner, which was neither plowed nor sanded, got stuck trying not to collide with another stranded motorist. We all disembarked and headed downtown, on foot. I went to another bus stop and proceeded to catch another bus. As we were following another bus, which promptly found himself in the same stuck situation, of course he hit a tree first and then became stuck, we got stuck...AGAIN! This time I did not disembark with the rest of them and thankfully the driver was smart enough to figure out how to get unstuck and again we were on our way.

Of course I was late for work and throughout this time I am calling to let my supervisors know where I am and how long it may continue to take me to get there. At which point they told me I could go on home if I wanted to. Are you kidding?! I made it this far I am not going back home and miss a day of work! Hmmm, law enforcement was encouraging everyone to stay off the roads, but we at my place of business didn't think it was bad enough to call a snow day :-)

Did it matter that I-105 was closed from Eugene to Salem? Oh no! Did it matter that cars were stranded all along the freeway, all 3 lanes of it,packed, from the Coburg exit to Springfield? Silly for asking!

Yes, I made it to work and then 2 hrs to get home that night, what a day! Thankfully I did not receive an incident, and hopefully I will not receive one for having called in Tuesday, which I might add, was equally dangerous.

It was quite an adventure to say the least!

The weather keeps threatening still. And still, we could face more snow this weekend. I can only laugh and sit back with my hot cocoa and my knitting in the warmth of my little apartment and hope the power doesn't fail :-)

Lesson here, just keep smiling. Life is a truly a wonderful adventure! And another thing...I really need to make some mittens!

Sounds like your Street/Road Department needs to come to Western New York to learn how, and shen, to start plowing snow.

Hope this next week goes a lot better.

PS... you MUST check out Indy in our snow on my blog. You will really be glad you are in Oregon!
